Beaches of Akrotiri

Seitan Limania

Beach of wild but enchanting scenery near the string. Three parallel narrow bays-ports are formed between high and secluded rocks that extend to the depth of the sea, but protect the coves from the strong currents of the surrounding sea. The name of the coves derives from these sea currents, “cursed ports” in Turkish.
Access from the steep path of Agios Spyridon, a descent that requires sports shoes for your safety and lasts about 10′.

Stavros

Stavros beach in Akrotiri is a spacious, fully organized beach with sunbeds, showers and a lifeguard. The waters are shallow, protected from waves by the forming bay and usually windless. It is a safe and secure choice. And near it, there are taverns for the service of the guests.
Scenes from the well-known movie “Zorbas the Greek” were shot on this beach in 1965.

Marathi

It consists of 2 beaches and a small harbor with boats and boats. The waters are clean and the beaches are organized with sunbeds and showers. On these beaches it is safe to swim, because again the beaches are geographically protected by bays-ports, but they can also host some marine activities. Also, a special feature of the beach are the birds of the area, mainly ducks and geese, which coexist with people while nesting on the opposite island. The islet in question is accessible by boat from the harbor next to and between the beaches, but is deserted as far as people are concerned.
Near the beaches there are cafes and taverns, which serve and attract more people.

Loutraki

Close to Marathi but smaller in size, Loutraki is a beach-cove, completely sheltered from the wind and safe waters, protected from all winds. The beach is organized with a canteen, showers, lifeguard and beach bar.

Holy Trinity Monastery of Tzagarolo

Pazinos is 10 minutes away from the historical monastery of Agia Triada in Akrotiri. The monastery, built at the beginning of the 17th century. by the brothers Ieremias and Lavrentios of the Venetian-Cretan Tzagaroli family, its architecture combines elements of Venetian rule and Cretan Renaissance. The monastery flourished under the two founding monks and continued to flourish during Turkish rule, despite the difficulties. However, the monastery’s participation in the revolutionary actions for liberation resulted in its burning and looting by the Turks in 1821. Renovated since 1855, the monastery has been a theological school since 1892 until today.

Catholic Holy Monastery

This monastery was built inside the Avalaki gorge in honor of Agios Ioannis the Hermit or Xenos in the 11th century. after his death. It borders the monastery of Gouvernetou, from which it is accessible by a path with steps to this day, the metochi of Agios Antonios and the Cave of Panagia tis Arkoudiotisa.

For its time it was one of the most important centers of asceticism, despite the difficult landscape. In fact, during the 17th century the monastery underwent renovations under Ieremias Tzagarolos with the erection of the bridge over the river of the gorge and the ascetic cells. This river ends in a fjord in the sea and used to form a small port that served the needs of the monastery, but it ended up being a threat during the time of the Mediterranean pirates, so the monks left the monastery and moved to neighboring Gouvernetos.

Also in the area of Akrotiri, around 15 minutes from Pazinos, is the historic monastery of Gouvernetos. Established since the 16th century. the monastery has survived two disasters so far – the fire of 1765 and the subsequent massacre and looting by the Turks during the revolution of 1821. The monastery is dedicated to the Entry of the Virgin, while its architecture includes a fortress enclosure.

Prophet Ilias and Tombs of Venizelos

Another important attraction of Akrotiri, the temple of the prophet Ilias which was built on a hill in the middle of the 16th century. The temple, although destroyed due to bombardment by the Great Powers, was renovated by the Czar of Russia.
